Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption reverses character progression

Sacrifice parts of yourself and suffer permanent de-buffs to beat bosses.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is an upcoming Souls inspired boss battler from developer DARK STAR and publishers Another Indie. Certainly the most interesting mechanic found in Sinner is the reversed character progression usually found in RPGs. Instead of leveling up, finding new gear and generally powering up after an encounter, Sinner forces you sacrifice a part of yourself in order to finally defeat it.

Iain Garner, co-founder of Another Indie told the Indie Game Website at EGX Rezzed:

“Each boss has its own sacrifice, such as a permanent de-buff, losing items or equipment, reduced quality of equipment or your stats. You’ll be at your most powerful you’ll ever be at the start of the game. There’s no optimal path in choosing which boss to battle, and what you’ll sacrifice first, no right or wrong way to do it. Different players will likely make their own choices.”

The game is, of course, inspired by the Souls series, however, Sinner strips away the grind and the levels, leaving only the intense boss battles the series is known for. Players can fight the bosses in any order they choose. Garner went on to explain: “We’ve had a good response from the Souls community. We knew what we enjoyed the most about the souls games, so we wanted to create a game and a system that takes advantages of those features and then hone them to a point.”

Average players will be able to complete the game in around 12 hours, and doing so unlocks new game+ mode, allowing the player more choices of weaponry, some that make encounters easier, others that make it tougher. There’s also a boss rush mode, where all of the bosses will spawn into an arena 50 seconds apart, meaning you’ll be fighting several at once.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption will launch on Steam and consoles simultaneously. There’s no word on the release date yet, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.
