Pillars of the Earth

The Pillars of the Earth’s final chapter launches today

Live the story of a literary classic.

The final part of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth, a three-part video game adaptation of Ken Follett’s bestselling novel of the same name, is now out on Steam. The game was developed by Daedalic Entertainment, a German developer from Hamburg.

The Pillars of the Earth is set in the English village of Kingsbridge in the 12th century, a time of war and economic strife. Philip the Monk becomes prior of Kingsbridge; meanwhile a young boy, Jack, is raised in the woods with his exiled mother, and he grows up to become a master architect. Jack, Philip, and a disgraced noblewoman Aliena work together to construct a great cathedral in Kingsbridge to bring the townspeople wealth and security.

The Pillars of the Earth is set in the middle of the Anarchy, a civil war within Normandy and England which created widespread political turmoil. The game is a story of political power grabs and conspiracy. But the story is concerned not so much about the political figures themselves, but about the lives of ordinary people who were affected by turmoil.

The game is a storybook, point-and-click adventure with classic adventuring and choices to be made during dialogue. Players can control five different characters including the three protagonists, Jack, Aliena, and Philip. Players are free to make their own decisions, and the choices that players make have a direct impact on the game’s ending.

The Pillars of the Earth has a stunning animated art style, over 200 hand-painted backgrounds, and an orchestral soundtrack performed by the FILMharmonic Orchestra.

Matt Kempke, game designer and co-author of The Pillars of the Earth explains, “Taking Ken Follett’s celebrated novel and turning it into an interactive adventure has been as exciting as it was challenging. We wanted to do justice to a story that immerses itself fully in English history, combining fact with fiction to create a potent tale that found a massive audience when it was released. The three chapters we’ve made now sync together to create one, expansive adventure we think point-and-click fans will love.”

The game, with all three chapters, is now available on The Pillars of the Earth Steam page for $29.99 USD / £26.99 / €29.99. There’s currently a daily deal for £13.49, so pick it up for cheaper while you can.
