BAFTA Award Winner presents The Spectrum Retreat

Dan Smith was 18 when he won the Young Game Designers Award in 2016.

Two years of development after being awarded with the Young Game Designers Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) with only 18 years old back in 2016, Dan Smith has announced that his narrative driven first-person puzzle mystery game, The Spectrum Retreat, will be released this year. This title will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

The production for The Spectrum Retreat has been made in conjunction of indie developers at Dan Smith Studios and Ripstone, responsible for games like Ironcast, Stick It To The Man, Pure Pool and Extreme Exorcism.

In The Spectrum Retreat players will have to explore the surreal and intriguing building of The Penrose hotel, filled with colour-coded puzzles hiding the secrets of this uncanny place that apparently grants never-ending stays to its guests.

Through the game’s latest press release, Dan Smith had this to say about the two years that have passed since his recognition by BAFTA:

“When I first began development, I couldn’t have anticipated that five years later we’d be releasing a game like this and that I would pick up a BAFTA along the way. The Spectrum Retreat is built on the mechanics I developed a few years ago, but they’re now integrated with a mature, absorbing story and setting. It’s been great to push the game further in every aspect and to craft an engaging world that can deliver the puzzles and story together.”

“We’ve worked closely with Dan as he, along with our in-house artists and programmers, crafted an experience which does justice to the vision he showed in his 2016 BAFTA award-winning demo. The puzzles possess a depth which betray Dan’s age and the story provides real emotional heft.”, explained Phil Gaskell, Creative Director at Ripstone Games.

The official Playstation Blog for the United States has published an article by Dan Smith stating that The Spectrum Retreat will be launched this summer.
