FAR: Lone Sails

Far: Lone Sails provides relaxing post-apocalyptic gameplay

Upcoming puzzle exploration game began life as a bachelor’s degree project.

FAR: Lone Sails is an exploration game set in a post-apocalyptic world with an intriguing visual and colour style. We met with publisher Mixtvision’s Alexandra Palme who discussed the unique experience and gameplay with us.

“In FAR: Lone Sails, you’re all alone. The aim of the game is to follow the tracks of of the people who used to live there. You’re on your own with an enormous machine, which is your only hope to find your people again. Along the way you find upgrades, different means of propelling the machine and fuel vital for your mission.”

The grey-scale environment found in the game has been “inspired by post-apocalyptic films such as Mad Max,” explains Palme. “The colour scheme provides atmosphere and makes the player feel melancholic and alone.” Objects that can be interacted with in the world are coloured in red and provide an obvious contrast to provide hints to the player.

Okomotive, the developers, a small, six person team from Switzerland began development as part of founder Don Schmocker’s bachelor’s degree. Further work on the game has been side by side with the completion of their master’s degrees.

Gameplay is linear – there’s no randomisation here, the focus instead is on providing  a deep visual and auditory experience, with a gameplay time of between three to four hours, depending on how players approach the game.

FAR: Lone Sails will launch onto Steam on the 17th of May, with PS4 and Xbox One launches coming at a later date.
