9 years in the making, INSOMNIA: The Ark is a truly epic RPG

Read all about its deep dieselpunk world in our promotional feature!

Good things come to those who wait, or so the saying goes. In the case of INSOMNIA: The Ark, its tiny ten-person developer, Studio Mono, have spent the best part of the past decade devising and crafting their dream game: a huge sci-fi roleplaying game, set on a colossal space station that once housed an intergalactic city.

Since being successfully Kickstarted in 2014, this 60+ hour RPG has amassed a dedicated following of fans, eager to get their hands on the game. Finally, that wait has come to an end, as INSOMNIA: The Ark launches via Steam this week.

Come Thursday, players will be able to explore Object 6 – an enormous space station set on a dismal 400-year journey in search of a new home. Your character wakes from cryogenic sleep – stricken with a rare psychological disease and unknowingly holding humanity’s last hope in his bare hands.

As the slowly degrading remnants of human society attempt to survive on an abandoned space metropolis, players will develop their character, explore lovingly handcrafted locations, interact with peculiar NPCs and factions, and try to stay alive in this brutal world.

INSOMNIA is no mean feat, considering its humble origins. Its Russian development studio embarked on an epic, labour-of-love project to make an ambitious sci-fi roleplaying game inspired by Fallout, Mass Effect and BioShock: a fusion of roleplaying genres that would become their dream game.

“It’s our first project, our beloved child,” says Anatoly Nekrasov, CEO and Lead Developer of Studio Mono.

“We’ve been developing INSOMNIA for nine years, and finally release is upon us! Since the Kickstarter in 2014, we’ve changed concepts, plot and mechanics for the better – while maintaining our original vision for a unique visual style and deep dystopian atmosphere.”

Over the years, the game’s systems and content developed. The final game features more than 250 unique characters, and a heady fusion of rich environment storytelling, character development, and edge-of-seat combat mechanics.

“We’d love to keep adding content,” adds CIO Vitaly Makarov, “but we have to let it go eventually! We’re delighted that our players can finally get their hands on INSOMNIA, and that they’ll enjoy and appreciate the work of a small indie team releasing their dream game.”

Like the look of INSOMNIA: The Ark? We don’t blame you. It’s available via Steam from this Thursday. Be sure to snap it up and experience one of the year’s most epic RPGs!
