Phantom Halls celebrates B-movie horror this Halloween

Promotional Feature: Try something a little different this Halloween with Phantom Halls!

It’s been described as “Worms meets Spelunky in a haunted house” and “Scooby Doo meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer” – and today, after 18 months in Steam Early Access, Phantom Halls finally hits V1!

It’s been a long journey for its tiny global indie team, headed up by Llexi Leon – the creative director of the official Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast mobile game. Dreaming of making a quirky PC game inspired by the cheesy horror films of their youth, Llexi and his team set about making an unusual kind of haunted house game: one with influences ranging from film and TV to both retro and modern video games.

At its heart, Phantom Halls is a side-scrolling squad-based action game. A group of teens from the local school’s Occult Studies Club set about their assignment, but soon find themselves lost and attempting to survive the night in a haunted mansion. In single-player mode, players control multiple characters at once – each with their own inventory, action buttons and special skills. But plug in more controllers and your friends can drop in and out, taking on the roles of the other characters on the mission.

From the quirky aesthetic of Maniac Mansion to the ammo scarcity of Resident Evil, and blending the multi-character chaos of Worms with the procedural generation of Spelunky, Phantom Halls is designed to feel fresh and exciting each and every time you pick it up – even if you’re replaying a case you’ve already completed. Enemies, weapons, traps, loot, and even the layout of the mansion itself are randomised, so there’s no point trying to learn levels off by heart – you’ll have to get good at spotting patterns and cues in order to stay alive.

Another talking point for Phantom Halls is the inclusion of officially licensed Evil Dead 2 content. Throughout the game, players can unlock Evil Dead 2-themed missions and content, and even a playable Ash Williams! Groovy…

And although Phantom Halls hits V1 today, that’s not the end of the story. There are more updates to come, including full online multiplayer functionality set to arrive later in the year via free DLC!

Phantom Halls is out now via Steam, priced at $19.99 / £15.54. It’s the perfect game to try out if you’re looking for something a little different this Halloween.
