The Long Dark’s first two episodes get remastered

The Long Dark fans get new content and tighter narrative structure.

The Long Dark

Fans of The Long Dark will want to pay attention to the game’s latest update. In a set of patch notes referred to as “Wintermute Redux,” the team states that it has released “completely overhauled” versions of both the game’s first and second episodes.

The project has been ongoing over a year, taking player feedback on board to help improve Story Mode and “strengthen the technical foundation” of the game in anticipation of completing the three remaining episodes.

The “Redux” of the episodes, according to Hinterland Studio, represents “thousands of fixes and improvements” as well as a swath of new content. There’s a new dialogue mode, for instance, and all dialogue is now fully voiced and animated. All cinematic have been redone as well. To that end, all dialogue has been rewritten and re-recorded as well.

If you’ve already played The Long Dark’s first two episodes, it’s well worth jumping in and taking a look at what’s been changed, since there’s new locations, a new introduction, new plot elements, and a general overall coat of polish applied to the project.

The team also worked to balance gameplay and challenging elements as well, overhauling the game’s mission structure and adding new encounters to keep things interesting for fans. It’s different enough that, to many, it warrants playing through again.

The entirety of the remastered episodes’ patch notes can be read here. If you haven’t played through The Long Dark yet, or are simply interested in doing so, now’s a great time to check it out.
