Bury Me, My Love launched on PC and the Switch
An immersive, choice-based tale about migration.
Interactive, choice-based narrative experience Bury Me, My Love has been released today for PC and the Nintendo Switch by French indie studio The Pixel Hunt. This is a story about migration, discrimination and expatriation in our modern world molded by connectivity and real-time communication.
Bury Me, My Love tells the story of Nour and Majd, a Syrian couple separated by the harsh reality of their country. We play as Majd as we follow the steps of his wife as she desperately tries to reach the land of Schengen (clearly an allusion to the Schengen Area, comprised by 26 European countries) in order to escape their reality.
The story plays out as we receive text messages and photos from our beloved wife through her journey, as well as questions as to what to do next and where to head to. Each of these conversations take place in intermittent intervals, sometimes spanning through several hours.
“It’s a very neat little framework that’s surprisingly immersive. Everything that happens which might, in other games, seem like a mechanic and break you out of its universe can be justified under the small but expertly designed umbrella of the game’s premise. Typos seemed like genuine mistakes on behalf of the text sender, not the developer, for example”, wrote Jeremy Bijil in our review of the title.
The game contains nineteen different endings, all of them tied to our choices throughout Nour’s journey, which not only have to do with her actual migration, but also with how we, as her husband, relate with the dynamics of the couple, leading to her agreeing with our choices or going her own way with what she thinks is best.
The whole story plays through our phones, which display the text messages we’ve received as well as photos and background images that reflect what part of the journey Nour’s in, as well as a map feature that allows us to follow her steps and check where she is.
