Ethan Carter devs: follow-up Witchfire started life quite differently

When Witchfire was almost a sci-fi survival sim.

In a recent blog post, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter developer’s The Astronauts discuss the project that Witchfire almost became. According to them, the title was very nearly a post-apocalyptic sci-fi survival simulator.

The devs put the inspiration for this project down to ”jumping on the bandwagon”. They explain: ”It seemed like the world has moved towards sandboxes like Day Z, Rust or Ark. We liked some of these games but figured we could do it differently.” They worked on the project for ‘around a year’, and have included within the blog post some example screenshots of how it was shaping up.

Unfortunately for this part-created world, the developers did not truly fall in love with the project and because of that lack of connection, decided against moving forward with it. In its current state ”Witchfire has nothing to do with what it once was”. While the team acknowledge that this failed alternative route may have been a waste of work and money, they conclude that ”we’ve never been happier than we are now”, so it can’t all have been for nothing.

The team have confirmed that Witchfire is still in a ‘weird pre-pro/production limbo’, and a release date has not been finalised.
