Crying Suns

Crying Suns is like FTL but with deeper narrative

The Foundation novels meet Battlestar Galactica and Dune.

Let me start this by saying that I am NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, a fan of rogue-lites. But you know, sometimes something special arrives like what happened with Into The Breach back in February 2018 and I find myself drawn into what I usually don’t enjoy. Same thing goes for games like The Flame In The Flood, This War of Mine and, finally, FTL: Faster Than Light. Masterpieces.

Now we get a new game that looks like it has the potential to attract many players with different tastes and not only rogue-lite fans. It’s called Crying Suns and it’s been developed by Alt Shift and will be published at some point in this year’s near future by Humble Bundle.

The trailer is pretty eloquent, giving as a pretty complete look at what we’re in for. As a clone of humanity’s greatest Admiral, Admiral Ellys Idaho, we will be responsible for the salvation of our race. Our machines have stopped working and a lone planet located at a far corner of the galaxy is our last hope. It sounds like the Foundation novels by Asimov, and that’s amazing.

But it’s still a rogue-lite, so we’re in for a pretty hard tactical combat challenge when we finally start our adventure as one more clone in a never-ending series of trials. We will manage a spaceship through a procedurally generated universe, diving into dangerous clusters filled with unknown dangers.

Our mission? Reactivate the giant god-like machines called OMNIs and discover what lead to their deactivation. Crying Suns offers more than 300 possible story events triggered by our progress, compiled into 6 different chapters. Crying Suns developers have stated that their narrative has been inspired by classics like the Foundation novels, Dune and Battlestar Galactica.

Graphic-wise, Crying Suns has an interesting blend between pixel art and 3D environments powered by Unity, granting its experience with very attractive visuals. It’s pixel art with depth of view and bright colors in space. It looks awesome.

There’s no defined release date for Crying Suns, although we can assume it’s going to be launched in the near future as we can already wishlist it on Steam.
