Within the Cosmos evokes No Man’s Sky levels of ambition

Nobody mention multiplayer.

Within the Cosmos and its first trailer have graced our screens, never heard of it? Well neither had we. Flung straight out of space, it’s a beautiful looking game, but whats it all about?

Woken from cryogenic sleep, you are a member of the United Earth Space Agency, sent to planet Berith II, in an attempt to preserve the doomed human race. It’s 2278, and let’s face it, things aren’t looking so great for old humanity who are waging a war against an unknown enemy. Berith II is based in the Adallio star system and seems to be humanities chance for peace. Alas, another enemy hides in this place too, and it is hell-bent on killing you and your crew. Tough break.

In this early trailer, combat looks a little stilted. Enemies don’t move and instead take your hits as if perfectly placed to do so. The range of guns and FPS aiming style instantly reminded me of the fights in Mass Effect, although there doesn’t seem to be a similar kind of cover system in place as of yet.

The narrative and what exactly you’ll spend your time doing are also, for the most part, a little vague. There are supposedly multiple planets to explore, with multiple narrative lines available so that choices you make could have an impact on the later story development. There are also plenty of enemies to shoot, and a separate ‘Swarm’ game mode that means you can shoot them as much as you like.

So far Within the Cosmos looks to be an intriguing spacey game, but until further details are released, it’s not clear how this Unreal engine game will differentiate itself from the pack.

Within the Cosmos will be released on 31st of May, check out its Steam page to keep on top of new details.
