Mutazione is the beautiful mutant soap opera you don’t want to miss

Mo’ mutants, mo’ problems.

Night in the Woods gave us sad animals, now Mutazione is giving us sad mutants. Melancholy tales, we can’t get enough of them. This new adventure game from Die Gute Fabrik channels the surrealist wonder of Infinite Fall’s 2017 narrative hit, and brings it to perhaps an even more unique setting. It’s so beautiful, we just had to share.

It’s backstory seems pretty fantastic too, with just the right mix of supernatural and banality to get my millennial attention. Over 100 years ago tragedy struck a tropical holiday resort when a meteor named ‘Moon Dragon’ hit with a thwack. Those that didn’t die had the ultimate X-Man moment, forming a community of like-minded mutants and creating Mutazione.

In Mutazione, the currency is gossip. In such a tight knit community, news is bound to get around, and the ensemble cast of this narrative adventure are all in each other’s pockets. They bounce off each other to create dialogue befitting shows like Twin Peaks and Deep Space Nine and all this is witnessed by our protagonist Kai, an outsider who has come to visit her grandmother, Nonno.

Mutazione

Players spend their time as Kai exploring the village, planting musical gardens and talking to those that hang around town. Get a handle on the small-town drama and you’ll unravel the secrets that dwell beneath, all housed in the gorgeous hand-illustrated world. It’s the kind of genre that games like Night in the Woods and Wandersong have done creative wonders with, and like with them, we can’t wait to see what takes place in this weird little world.

Mutazione will be debuted at this year’s Gamescon, and will also be released on PC and PS4 later this year. To find out more visit it’s Steam page.
