This War of Mine’s fire finally burns out with Fading Embers

It’s about to get bleaker.

This War of Mine took a bleak and tricky survival game and from it created This War of Mine: Stories, a series taking a greater narrative focus on this distinctive, war-torn world. It’s a refreshing way of working, as rather than additional content for the game becoming small expansions to a gameplay mechanic, the DLCs in this series really delve deeper into human stories of those in this world. But alas, all good things come to an end, and Fading Embers will be the final instalment of this series, rounding it off to three episodes in total.

Fading Embers casts the player as Anja, another civilian trying to survive constant violence. Living in a warzone and carrying a heavy burden. According to the developers, the battle Anja faces is an internal one, as she “wrestles with herself to answer the question of what is more important – survival of human legacy or the survival of a man.”

Lead artist Tomasz Kisilewicz explains,”The latest This War of Mine story focuses on choices that can lead to multiple endings. These branches were necessary to help address the overarching question of what has the bigger value — things made by men that outlast life or the life of a man itself. When you think about it, humans stand against the destructive power of war not only to save themselves but also to save what entire generations have created.”

Balancing narrative with the survival mechanics that keep you sneaking from one battered environment to the next, This War of Mine is a bit of a hidden gem that definitely deserves your attention. This last instalment will be available on August 6th. Visit the Season Pass Steam page to find out more.
