The Sojourn takes puzzle gaming to an ethereal realm

Is this the next The Witness?

Joining the ranks of puzzle games set in preposterously beautiful settings, such as Rime and The Witness, puzzle game The Sojourn finally has a release date. It’s like puzzle games aren’t allowed to look dull anymore. If they’re not sun-drenched, not interested.

Joking aside, The Sojourn is eye catching-ly beautiful in a way that instantly grabs attention. Playing with the theme of light, here players are guided through the mysterious world by characterful animated lights, acting in the same sort of roll that the fox has in Rime. Light is an important mechanic in this world, as when puzzles are completed darkness is banished from the ethereal environment. It’s a poetic form of puzzle solving, as the solution is revealed, so the world is filled with light.

From the trailer, The Sojourn looks like it’ll go in a similar direction to Rime, constructive a vague narrative via symbols and statues you find throughout the world. How that story unravels is unclear for now, but with the trailer littered with statues showing blindfolded characters hugging, its bound to be emotional.

The game features, “dozens-upon-dozens of challenging puzzles”, split out into to four distinct chapters. It was selected for E3 Indie’s Judging Night this year and won Best Unreal Game at Gamescom last year. It’s a title to keep an eye on for sure. it will be coming to PC on September 20th exclusive to the Epic Store. It’ll also be released on Xbox One and PS4.
