What Even Is Kentucky Route Zero

I walk a lonely route, the only one that I have ever known

Every so often a game emerges that seems as though it’s come out of nowhere. Suddenly everyone is talking about it, everyone wants to talk about it, or people are too busy playing it to give you their hot takes. Other times, that game has actually been out for seven years, but is episodic and has only just concluded, which has sparked a whole new wave of interest. The latter is the case with Kentucky Route Zero, although you’d probably already guessed that was the case from the hyper-specific example.

You might be one of the many people that has already played Kentucky Route Zero and one of those who have forged a deep connection with its incredible story and characters. If you’re not, though, you should probably find out why everyone’s been talking about it. If the people you know aren’t talking about it yet, they probably will be. The developers describe Kentucky Route Zero as being a “magical realist adventure game about a secret highway running through the caves beneath Kentucky, and the mysterious folks who travel it.”

Really though, it’s a point-and-click game about humanity and all of our strange little quirks. It’s full to the brim with characters who feel familiar, but all feel slightly off too. It’s a fascinating world full of all things nostalgic and unknown, and it’s a story that will drag your through from one unexpected story beat to the next. It’s the kind of game that helps remind us just how powerful games can be, and if that sounds good to you, then you should definitely check it out. Also, there’s a phone line you can call to get some parts of the story, and that’s quirky as hell.
