Gothic Remake Proves Fan Feedback Can Work

Eyeliner, spiky wristbands, and dinosaurs

A few months ago the Gothic Playable Teaser was released on Steam as a way for THQ Nordic to check whether or not people were still interested in the series. That’s understandable, given that it originally released in 2001, meaning, in the words of Staind, it’s been a while.

Well, they also asked fans what people would want, and a rather massive 94.8% of people responded saying they’d be in favour of a remake. As a result of this, THQ Nordic will be doing just that, which means they listened to the people who asked them for it.

Now, there’s a weird relationship between developers and fans, and for good reason. For starters, the things that people say they want aren’t always actually what they want, or are simply unrealistic or unachievable. Then there’s the fact that a lot of people who make a lot of noise are often not the majority, meaning that listening to them and acting on the things they say would just result in a game that nobody really wants.

However, in this one instance at least, this can only be a good thing. A classic game is coming back because of people’s enthusiasm, meaning that the feedback was all lead by positive things, instead of the usual negative nonsense that can often define the collective voice of people who play games. It’s nice to see something come from this style of interaction, and hopefully, the remake will live up to what people want as well. We’ll see just as soon as it comes out, although that’ll be a long old while.

At least you can play the teaser, to, uh, tease ya.
