Rogue Heroes: Ruins Of Tasos Is A Roguelike Zelda

Legend of who now?

The Legend of Zelda is great; there, I said it. It’s the hottest of takes, the most unpopular of opinions, and perhaps the boldest thing I’ll ever write with my own two hands. If I ever try and top that scorchingly hot take, I’ll be sure to use my feet or my nose or something. Anyway, Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos, has some big Zelda energy. So much so that you could be forgiven for thinking it’s a spinoff title of some sort.

It’s not though; it’s actually a Kickstartered roguelike game that, thanks to Team 17, is headed to both PC and Nintendo Switch later this year. Even better, I lost a big old chunk of time to the demo, and I already adore it. It feels incredibly good to play thanks to easy to learn combat, a wonderfully satisfying loop of death and rebirth, and even a simple class system.

There’s also the fact that it feels perfectly nostalgic, and any game that comes close to Zelda is one worth playing for a lot of people. There are dungeons to fight through, items to collect, a village to upgrade, and co-op to enjoy. Basically, it could be one of the most interesting roguelikes coming out this year, and I’m very excited about it given my love of the subgenre. There’s no firm release date as of yet, but if the rest of the game is as polished as the demo then hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.
