Deep Rock Galactic Is Minecraft With Dwarfs In Space

That’s quite the title

Dwarves are generally depicted as ground-dwelling raucous drunks who’ll do any joy that’s given to them for the right price. Deep Rock Galactic isn’t going to change any of these stereotypes, but it is damn good fun, and that’s worth talking about on its own. It’s been in Early Access for a while, but emerged from its Early Access burrow on May 13th, and I’ve been playing it a lot with friends since then.

You can choose one of four different classes, each of which has a different loadout and special ability. The aim is always the same though; dig deep into a planet, harvest some stuff, kill whatever tries to stop you, and make it back to your spaceship for a pint or two. The worlds generated can be dug through and decimated in a lot of different ways, and the best moments of Deep Rock Galactic often come from accidentally digging through into a room filled with fire or deadly monsters, rather than any of the successes.

After every mission, you get a chance to see if you can buy yourself some new equipment before diving straight back into the ground again. It’s a really satisfying loop, and one that feels unique despite the comparisons that can be made, including the one I’ve already made in the title here. It’s so much more than the sum of its parts, and if you’re looking for something a little bit different, then Deep Rock Galactic is a very good choice for your next big co-op adventure.
