Drake Hollow Looks Like A Goth Pikmin Game

So dark, so edgy, so leafy

The Flame in the Flood was an excellent and sometimes exhausting game that managed to find a home amongst those who enjoyed its gorgeous aesthetics and tricky gameplay. It’s incredibly exciting then, to see that Drake Hollow, the next game from The Molasses Flood, is coming out July 17th. What’s even better though, is just how interesting it looks, and also, how familiar it is despite being something very different.

Set in a place called The Hollow, your role is to help the Drakes (hence the title) survive against The Feral. Drakes are little plant-like creatures who can apparently literally die of boredom. To keep them alive, you need to build their town, help feed and water them, and keep them entertained too. That means some fun town-building, and that’s always a lot of fun when you’re doing it for cute vegetables. Of course, that’s only half the story, you also need to be able to defend your adorable and very much alive herb garden from The Feral.

The Feral are nightmare monsters clearly designed to invoke a nice bit of primal fear in all of us. This part looks a lot like a town-defence game where you have to use whatever ramshackle weapons you can find to take down legitimately horrifying enemies. I’d rather not fight against a being of pure darkness using a tennis racket, but, well, sometimes you’ve just got to use whatever is at hand. It could be a lot of fun, and the ability to play in online co-op is always a good shout with this kind of game too. We’ll see just how good it is in a couple of weeks.
