ARK: Survival Evolved
No list of survival games would be complete without everyone’s favourite bodybuilding/dinosaur-taming simulator. That’s right ARK: Survival Evolved is a game where you play a fitness model who has ended up with a weird machine lodged in your arm and you have to not only survive in the wilds where you’ve landed, but also try and punch a dinosaur and stuff. Honestly, it’s great, and you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t try it out at least once.
Don’t Starve Together
Don’t Starve Together takes all of the stress, eldritch horror, and fear of the dark from the single-player game, and adds in other idiots (usually your friends) to play with. It makes the experience a lot more chaotic, but no less entertaining. It’s one of the best examples of how style can make or break a game, and you’re going to lose a lot of hours to it if you can find a group to play with.
Oxygen Not Included
Oxygen Not Included has you trying to keep a space-colony alive in outer space. You’ll have to hardness everything around you and constantly come up with new technology if you want to survive. The good news is that you can survive, the bad news is that it’s highly unlikely, at least to begin with. It’s a lot of fun, and you’re going to have to take science very seriously if you want to make it through.
Subnautica
Subnautica understands that the most alien place we have on Earth is the sea. It’s a completely different set of rules than the ones we’re used to, and it’s terrifying as a result. Just look at some of the real-life creatures that exist down in the dark high-pressured environments that exist on the seafloor. Well, Subnautica takes that and turns it up to 11. It’s going to make you jump. You’ve been warned.
Frostpunk
If the world completely froze over, and the only thing left to keep anyone warm was a reactor that could only be powered by coal, how on earth would we survive? That’s basically the premise of Frostpunk, and it makes it one of the most hauntingly tragic survival games around. There are no fun adventures to have here, just the constantly encroaching cold and the horrific decisions you’ll have to make to keep people alive. It doesn’t sound like an entertaining game, but it is.
