You Should Play Guild Of Dungeoneering

Digital board games are kind of great. The digital version of actual board games are one thing, but the digital board games that don’t exist anywhere else tend to be far more enjoyable. In much the same way that a digital CCG can do things that a physical one can’t the same is true of board games. Guild of Dungeoneering feels very much like a board game. You draw cards into your hand, lay out the dungeon ahead of you, and upgrade your character and hopefully not die. It has elements of classic dungeon crawling and even some light roguelike bits, but it’s definitely got more of a board game energy than anything else.

The thing that really keeps it fresh in my mind is the humour though. It’s a little too snarky in places, but generally speaking, it’ll bring a smile to your face and a small chortle to your belly. It’s the kind of light-hearted nonsense that makes the fact that it can be crushingly difficult far more bearable.

I also really like the visual style of the game. Something about the simple-looking hand-drawn visuals makes it really easy to understand. That follows through into the game itself initially too, and you’ll pick it up in a heartbeat. It then does that wonderful thing where it grows a little faster than you do, and you end up feeling rightfully challenged in all the best places. It’s just a good game, and I think you should give it a go.
