Review Round Up: Mars Horizon, Boreal Blade, And More

November is basically over, and that means it’s December, and that means it’s nearly 2021, and that means that we can probably just skip to 2022 where hopefully things will be normal again. We can’t actually skip any of that though, which means we’re going to have to push through. Oh well, at least we’ve always got games. In fact, here are a few that you might have missed this month that maybe you shouldn’t have?

Flailure

I love a good pun, and Flailure is definitely a good pun. It’s also a pretty good game. It’s got some silly mechanics, ragdoll physics, and cute animals all fighting it out to try and come out on top. There’s a wonderful level of chaos to the way each match plays out, and while it’s not always complex, there’s no denying how much fun beating your friends is. It’s definitely more a game for younger gamers, but there’s fun to be had here no matter what age you are.

Boreal Blade (Early Access)

Multiplayer sword games are fun. Boreal Blade is also fun, but it’s also rather janky at the moment. It has online PvP multiplayer that requires you to find games online and hope for the best. It’s not all that easy to get into games, which can be frustrating, but it is fun when it all works. However, as it stands, I can’t recommend you get Boreal Blade just yet, but I do think it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Dieselpunk Wars (Early Access)

Dieselpunk Wars is an odd game. It’s part big old machine building, and part battles that use those monstrous machines to beat the hell out of each other. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but I do think the joy of seeing your own war machine rampaging through strange lands and wrecking face is one that’ll appeal to a very specific audience in a powerful way.

Mars Horizon

Mars Horizon puts you in charge of a space agency that has to try and make it into space successfully and even land on Mars. It’s a fun game with some incredibly deep managements options to consider, and it’s the kind of thing that sim nerds are going to love. You’ll find yourself committing to a loop of “just one more bit” and easily lose hours to Mars Horizon if you’re not careful. It also feels fairly educational thanks to the partnership with the European Space Agency. I don’t think I can be an astronaut yet, but with a few more hours in the game maybe I can manage it.

Tesla Force

Tesla Force is a solid twin-stick shooter that has you fighting through a deeply messed-up world paying as historical characters. Gameplay-wise it’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect. There are lots of enemies, absurd weapons, and a lot of fun to be had. There’s fun to be had here for fans of the genre, but it doesn’t do enough to entice anybody who wouldn’t already be interested.
