The Best Upcoming Games December

It’s finally the end of this accursed year. Sure, maybe nothing will change when we hit 2021, but it still feels like an accomplishment to have made it through. So, congratulations to you, dear reader, for pushing through the mess that this year has been. Thankfully it’s been a really good year for games, especially for indie games, so at least we can stay focussed on that as we close out this mess.

Worms Rumble

First up we’ve got a game which is already out, and is actually free on PlayStation at the moment. That’s right, Worms Rumble might not be the Worms game people were hoping for, but it might just be the Worms game to bring new fans into the franchise. Worms rumble is just a big old free-for-all deathmatch most of the time, but it’s a lot of fun, easy to learn, and kind of a joy.

Worms Rumble released on December 1st.

Haven

I’ve written about Haven a few times this year, and I’m really excited about it finally being out. It stars two lovers on the run on a mysterious planet as they try and navigate not just this otherworldly place, but also their relationship. The promise of this unique mix of an interpersonal relationship and then gigantic monsters is one that calls to me, and I’m hoping it’ll be as good as it sounds.

Haven is releasing on December 3rd.

Orwell’s Animal Farm

Animal Farm is one of those classic books that lots of people were forced to read in school. Whether you like it or not, the idea of a game based on it really is fascinating. Whether or not it manages to deliver on the same beats as those in the written form remains to be seen, but hey, at least there will be the occasional cute farm animal.

Orwell’s Animal Farm releases on December 10th.

Airborne Kingdom

Chillout games have become kind of essential this year, and Airborne Kingdom looks like it could be the next big edition to whatever your current rotation is. You get to manage a magical floating kingdom and try and help out the plebs stuck on the ground. It’s just really cool, and managing not just the city but your fuel reserves seems like a great way to spend a few hours.

Airborne Kingdom floats out on December 17th.

Override 2: Super Mech League

Picture this, big old robots smacking the ever-loving bolts out of each other in over-the-top arenas with absurd weapons and abilities. Think Robot Wars, but with genius-level creators at the helm with infinite resources. That’s basically what you’re getting with Override 2, and I am very much here for it. There’s no way in hell anybody isn’t going to enjoy this absurd slug-fest.

Override 2: Super Mech League smashes onto the scene on December 22nd.

If you like the look of these, then check out the 20 best games of the decade. That’s last decade though, not this decade. We’ll get to that list, but although 2020 has been long, it’s not actually been a decade yet.
