The Most Exciting Games To Look Forward To In 2021

As we’re about to enter a whole new year and whatnot, I thought it might be fun to look ahead to next year and pick some of the most exciting indie games we have to look forwards to. While the best games of 2021 remain to be seen, we’d be surprised if each of these didn’t feature in the discussions when the time comes. So, let’s dive on in, shall we?

The most exciting games of 2021

Now, it’s important to note that while we’re expecting these to all launch in 2021, there are no guarantees, especially after a year like this one where everything went awry. Nevertheless, these are the ones I’m hoping to see, and I think they could all be winners.

Boyfriend Dungeon

Sometimes you just want to date a sword that is secretly a hot dude, and that’s a completely reasonable thing to want. If this sounds like you, then boy oh boy are you going to like Boyfriend Dungeon. Not only do you get to fight your way through the dungeons in the game, but you get to do so while dating/wielding hot people/weapons and it’s all kind of great. At least, we think it’s going to be great.

Sports Story

Sports Story is the follow-up to the surprisingly excellent Golf Story, and if it can maintain even half of the sheer joy that the original managed then it’ll be exceptional. You get to play through a plethora of different sports and activities as you make your way through a surprising story and live out an amazing life. It’s not your traditional game, because you’re night beating up monsters or baddies, but that’s all good sometimes.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Look, if you’re not excited about the sequel to one of the best games of all-time then I really can’t help you. Hollow Knight rapidly became one of the most-talked-about indie games around thanks to its incredible gameplay, lovely visual design, and fiendish difficulty. Silksong originally started out as an expansion to the game, but it got bigger and bigger and now we got a whole new adventure instead.

Hitman 3

The rebirth of the Hitman series has been something of a shock success, at least to idiots like me who apparently never really appreciated the potential of the games. Well, Hitman 3 is the first one that’ll be completely independently produced and I’m very excited to see what IO Interactive can do with the formula without any kind of compromises. It should be a huge amount of stupid fun, and the sandbox is no doubt going to be stunning too.

Returnal

Housemarque is one of the most intriguing developers out there, and they normally produce absolutely top-tier arcade games designed to be played until your thumbs start bleeding. Returnal (stupid name) is a bit different though as it’s a roguelike and a completely different graphical style to what we’ve seen so far. If it can match the same satisfying gameplay as the studio normally manages to achieve then it’ll undoubtedly be one of the best games of 2021.
