Cuphead multiple wins at The Game Awards

Three well deserved wins for an awesome original game.

Cuphead, the fantastic 1930s cartoon inspired multiplayer shooter cleared up at The Game Awards 2017.  As it was almost certain to, Cuphead won the best art direction award for reasons you can see above.  If you saw someone playing Cuphead and somehow didn’t know what it was, you’d certainly think it a cartoon.  Considering the competition in this category, this win is a remarkable achievement.  Also in the running was: Destiny 2; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn.  They’re all great looking games, but not as unique and memorable as Cuphead.

The next win was best indie game, and I think most people who have played Cuphead wouldn’t have imagined this award going to any other game.  Still it had strong competition, going against: Pyre; Night in the Woods; What Remains of Edith Finch and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.  Cuphead has, since its release in September of this year, been one of the highest rated games on Steam, being rated as overwhelmingly positive by the community.

The final win for the game, and developers StudioMDHR, was best debut indie game.  This award was undeniably deserved; it’s hard to think of another debut game that achieved so much only three months after release.  Other games nominated for best debut were Slime Rancher by Monomi Park, Mr. Shifty by Team Shifty, Hollow Knight by Team Cherry and Golf Story by Sidebar Games.

Cuphead was also nominated for best score/music, which I am quite surprised that it didn’t win, however there’s no shame in losing in this category to Nier: Automata.  Finally, Cuphead was also nominated for best action game, and though not winning in this category, even being nominated alongside games like Wolfenstein II and Nioh is amazing for an indie game.
