The Dreamcatcher is a beautiful, creepy psychological thriller

Are our wishes reflected through our dreams?

What if the founder of psychoanalysis was right all along? What if what we dream is a direct representation of what we wish deep down? And what if our dreams affected reality? Every fictional masterpiece, especially sci-fi ones, started off with a “what if” question. The Dreamcatcher is no exception and stretches Sigmund Freud’s theories all the way to magical realism.

The Dreamcatcher has been developed by Chinese indie studio Huanlin Games and is coming soon to PC through Steam. And the guys over there did a great job at putting a mesmerizing trailer together to hook us right in. Its build up is just on point and the rising tension crept down my spine when watching it.

This walking simulator will put us in the role of a recently graduated young man taking his first steps into the real world. But his subconscious betrays him and seems to be trying to break through his dreams. Soon enough the boundaries between what’s real and what isn’t will get really blurry. But what if dreams are affecting reality?

This first-person adventure will certainly make us think and reflect on ourselves, our experiences and traumatic periods of our lives. We’ll probably be able to relate to The Dreamcatcher’s story in more than one way. Mental health is most likely one of the main topics in this game, so it’ll probably be a memorable experience for many of us.

Light puzzle-solving, some horror elements, and chilling messages are also part of The Dreamcatcher, a trip I’m eager to embark on. There’s a thick layer of mystery surrounding this game’s narrative and I can’t wait to find out more about it, especially how personal this tale can get for each player. Will it be a generic path or are we going to get our own journey, carved by our choices? There’s no info on that yet.

What we do know is that dreams will contain some sort of obstacles that we’ll have to overcome in order to progress through The Dreamcatcher.
