Is this the most beautiful trailer from E3 2019?
Studio Ghibli meets Bambi.
We think it might be. Anthony Tan, creator of this Studio Ghibli-esque third person adventure game Way to the Woods, released a stunning new trailer at E3 2019. In the trailers just 1:20 minute time span, we are taken through a variety of entropic environments, as the game’s deer and faun protagonists journey through an abandoned city to find their way back to the woods.
This isn’t the first time Way to the Woods has caught the attention of the internet. When Anthony Tan shared images of the project in 2015, he was just 16, and the shots quite rightly did the rounds on twitter and reddit. The game has a wonderful mix of The Last of Us visuals with its crumbling city, with music that sounds like it’s come straight from a Ghibli film. This paired with the interesting mechanics of light and darkness make the trailer incredibly visual interesting, immediately drawing the player in.
The main gameplay mechanic seems to be the deers horns, which once bucked against an object can break their way through, and can also emit light that brings back to life certain machinery. These mechanics create an intriguing mix of the mechanic and the natural, as we see these two wild creatures walk past broken escalators and subway turnstiles, covered in moss and weeds.
It’s a world that seems incredibly inviting, and lucky for us, it will be available to play in 2020. For now, Tan only has his tumblr page to show off his assets, but with a publisher secured for the project (Team17), we’ll no doubt see more soon.
