Is My Friend Pedro the new Hotline Miami?
It’s blood, it’s gore, it’s bananas.
It’s truly bananas. Dead Toast Entertainment’s new game, published by Devolver Digital (masters of all sorts of crazy things) is called My Friend Pedro and we’ve been waiting for it for quite some time now. It was showcased throughout last year’s conferences and this year’s E3, and now it’s ready for launch.
We’re not particularly sure what the storyline for My Friend Pedro is all about, but what got people really expectant for it was it’s crazy gunplay mixed with acrobatics and mid-air shooting. Today, Devolver Digital uploaded a launch trailer for its upcoming release, which is tomorrow.
This last trailer puts gameplay aside and focuses on imagery and a banana -yes, a banana- who seems to play a major role in its story. “My Friend Pedro is a violent ballet about friendship, imagination, and one man’s struggle to obliterate anyone in his path at the behest of a sentient banana”, reads the game’s description in its Steam page.

The trailer shows the banana hosting a cooking TV show, as well as being part of news report, as if this individual fruit had invaded our main character’s life in some way that renders it unavoidable. Somehow we’ll take part of a crazy killing spree a la Hotline Miami, mixing psychological elements and brutal action. Maybe this is all in our imagination?
When I saw My Friend Pedro’s gameplay for the first time I was truly excited for the insanity of it all, the dancing while shooting and making bullets bounce off frying pans and more shenanigans. It was visually attractive, clearly fun to play and now I’m curious about the narrative beneath this gory surface. I could keep making comparisons with Hotline Miami, but I think the point is made. Just check out the launch trailer and be ready for release tomorrow.
