To the Moon devs announce ‘sequel’ in most confusing manner possible

Is it even a sequel?

Announcing your new game via reference to one of your most successful previous games is a pretty solid marketing strategy; we get that. But having the announcement trailer feature an incredibly long pixelated dance sequence, and calling the game something entirely different to the title of your trailer video, that’s quite confusing.

On their website page dedicated to the new game, Impostor Factory, Freebird studios describe it as “a bonkers time-loop tragicomedy murder mystery thriller featuring multiple casualties and a suspicious cat”. Which… doesn’t make things that much clearer, but at least gives us some sense of the genre and narrative.

Freebird Studios gained huge success with To the Moon in 2011, an adventure RPG that was a real tear-jerker. It’s sequel, Finding Paradise, was similarly emotion-focused, putting weight behind narrative that really captured the player’s attention, embroiling them in the life of a dying man. You can see why then, Impostor Factory, a tragicomedy based around murder, seems a little out of synch. From Steam’s description, the game appears to still feature the protagonists of its predecessors, Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts, but it also states that, “this isn’t their story. Probably.” It seems like this mystery game remains a mystery for now.

Who knows. We’re certainly never the type to be annoyed about a bit of innovation, so regardless of its thematic place within the series, we’re excited to see what Freebird Studio has in store for us. To keep up to date, you can wishlist Impostor Factory now on Steam, where it should be released at the end of 2020.
