Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin Looks Incredibly Cool

Plant the seeds, then beat up a weasel

Farming games are very much making a comeback, no doubt thanks to the success of Stardew Valley. Well, at least, Stardew Valley helped developers realise that there are still plenty of people who want more farming sims. Well, Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin is at least partially a farming game. It’s also partially an action game where you have to fend off demonic beasts using your farm tools. That’s an interesting premise, and it could bring a whole new audience to the genre.

You play as the titular Sakuna, who is a spoiled harvest goddess who has been banished to an island for being a pain in the butt. Your aim is to not only survive there, but also prove that you’re worthy of your divinity. You do this by not only making sure your crops survive, but by beating the evil out of anything foolish enough to try and threaten you. It’s a cool mix of gameplay styles, and it looks like it could be a lot of fun.

The idea is interesting because it could mean that action fans end up farming, and farming fans end up taking names. I love a good genre mash-up, and this manages to not only be two interesting genres, but also a mix that looks incredibly pretty. Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin is coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch on November 10th this year. I’d also wager it could be coming to other platforms, but we’ll see how that goes.
