King Arthur: Knight’s Tale Is A Dark Fantasy XCOM
Look, I love a good twist on a classic tale. Seeing something you think you know warped into something you definitely don’t is a uniquely joyful experience. The strange mix of familiarity and the unknown makes for a tale that’s sure to keep you pressing forwards as you try and figure out what you do know and what you don’t. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is exactly this. It’s a twist on what many of us know as a classic tale of the Arthurian times, and it’s one filled with darkness and horrific monsters.
Rather than taking control of King Arthur, you’ll be playing as Sir Mordred, who’s often depicted as the villain of the story. You’ll have to command your team across a variety of battlefields and use every ability across five different classes and over thirty heroes to come out on top. You’ll need to not only know your own characters but learn all about your enemies as well. So, you know, a bit like XCOM.
What makes King Arthur: Knight’s Tale really fascinating is that each hero will have their own skill trees to explore and you’ll be able to turn each hero into something built just for you. It’s designed to be hard too, so you’re probably going to want to try and max out each character as best you can. You’ll not only lose character as they get injured, but have to heal them, cure diseases, and probably end up mourning your dead.
On top of all of that, every decision you make will impact the story and on your morality. Plus, you’ll also get to manage your own version of Camelot. That means building up your own castle and managing your stronghold as you see fit.
It all sounds like a lot of fun, and this take on the legend could well make for one of the most interesting games of 2021. It’s also a big change for the studio, as it marks a much slower pace compared to the normal ARPG fare that they produce. If you want to test it out, you can when it hits the beta period in November. If you like the sound of all of this, you can actually support it on Kickstarter too.
