Hand-drawn adventure Unfolded: Camellia Tales unveils the shrouded history of South Korea’s Jeju Island
A young boy watches over the horizon, imagining that this look-out shift will be just the same as all the others. Slowly, dark smoke begins to curl through the sky.
Take the role of Herman, a young aspiring poet, as he comes of age during a time of great strife for his home. Equipped with only his book of sketches, an inquisitive mind and a knack for puzzle-solving, Unfolded: Camellia Tales brings history to life in a compelling hand-drawn point and click-style adventure.
Developed by South Korean studio COSDOTS, Unfolded: Camellia Tales is based on the real world tragedy that transpired on Jeju Island, South Korea, in 1948 – referred to as the ‘Jeju uprising’ – details of which were censored and kept from the public for decades. With Unfolded: Camellia Tales, COSDOTS not only seek to join in the voices drawing attention to this tragedy, but also tell the story of Jeju Island – through puzzles rooted in its folklore and a hand-drawn rendition of life on the island, giving a glimpse into the humanity behind the history.
Unfolded: Camellia Tales appeals to not only those who love to delve into the past, but also players that like a strong set of puzzles and an endearing cast in their adventure games.
Telling Herman’s story over four chapters, Unfolded: Camellia Tales delivers an unforgettable experience to the Western adventure game community. Unfolded is filled with the markers of a classic point and click game – Herman can collect, combine and investigate the objects he comes across on his journey, the vast majority of which share more about Jeju’s traditions and past. Herman is also equipped with his journal and sketchbook, allowing him to jot down poetry and doodles when the moment strikes.
