Selini

Recollect lost memories in the old world of Selini

Selini is a game that hankers for the past. Set in an abandoned world that looks like an alternative version of our own, the side-scrolling adventure looks set to be an emotional side-scroller; after all, you play as someone who’s trying to find their lost memories amidst these ruins.

The developer has kept things scant so far: in short, you’ll solve puzzles and unearth secrets left behind by humanity. But it’s also in Selini’s tranquil dreamscapes, as well as and the prominence of lofi technology, that Selini sought to capture the distinct atmosphere of retrofuturism, evoking a wistfulness for a future we will probably never experience, yet are mournfully nostalgic for. While exploring the oddly serene but broken remnants of this world, you’ll come across other figures, interact with the debris and machinery, and ponder over your discoveries in the midst of fields of tall grasses and misty skies.

Aside from puzzles, you’ll also get to collect resources “for your space-home”, “manipulate gravity” and “transform the world”, according to the solo developer behind the game. Given that Selini is set in space, gravity mastering is said to be one skill you’ll need to master to navigate this universe, which means that you’ll probably have to maneuver through these spaces with your janky jetpack.

Accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack, Selini sticks to a tried-and-tested formula that doesn’t break the mold, but is still enchanting and mysterious enough that I’m tempted to give Selini a go when it’s released. Whenever that is, we’re not sure yet, but you can learn more about the game on Steam.
