Horror game Agony faces censorship

Madmind Studio have had to drop their plans for an optional uncensored patch due to legal issues.

Madmind Studio have detailed their struggles in obtaining a rating certificate from PEGI and the like in a new post on their Steam page called Censorship in Agony – final statement!

In case you’ve missed it, Agony is a first-person, survival horror game set in hell. As early gameplay footage showed, the developers were trying to create the most visceral representation of the underworld players had ever seen. It was, in part, the shockingly graphic gameplay trailers that caught people’s attention and got people excited for a game that didn’t seem afraid to push boundaries.

It appears the game run into issues after some small portions of its more outlandish scenes have struggled to get approval. The original answer to this it seems was to release an optional patch for adult players to download that would allow them to see the content as the developers originally intended. According to the blog post this idea has been shut down due to ‘legal issues’ but the devs go on to state that they do not believe it will affect the game in a significant way, as it only concerns two out of the seven endings.

“Please bear in mind that leaving this content uncensored would result in the game being banned and us, Madmind Studio, being sued. That would simply lead to the studio being closed. Obviously, we don’t want this to happen and we hope that you understand it.” Said Madmind Studio in a statement.

The Agony devs did go on to list all the saucy stuff that you can still expect from the game though, which shows their commitment to delivering a game that lives up to the name horror. Here’s the list in all its glory.

  • Gore
  • Brutal Sex Scenes
  • Lesbian and Gay Sex Scenes
  • Genital Physics
  • Eye Gouging
  • Heart Plucking
  • Children Heads Exploding
  • Setting Fire to Martyrs and Demons
  • Intense Violence
  • Strong Language
  • Drugs

So, as you can see, censorship might be the wrong word. Agony is out today on Steam.
