A good art style goes a long way these days. That’s in part due to graphics being so good that realism isn’t as exciting, and in part, because a good sense of style never goes out of fashion. Giraffe and Annika certainly looks great, but it also aims to keep your ears happy with a focus on rhythm-based battles.

You play as Annika herself, a cat-eared girl who finds herself on the mysterious Island of Spica. She’s tasked with finding pieces of stars by a boy called Giraffe, who isn’t a giraffe at all but another animal eared manga-looking character. It looks like the kind of game meant to evoke a nostalgia for the character platformer games of the PS1 era, but whether or not it can hold a candle to those remains to be seen.

Alongside the pretty world, the cutesy characters, and the musical matches, you can also watch the cutscenes play out in the form of manga themselves. Each one looks hand-drawn and incredibly evocative, which will be a great touch for any manga or anime fans out there. On top of all of that, it also won a bunch of awards at Tokyo Game Show in 2019, which means it might not just be a good-looking game, but one that manages to match its style with substance too.

Giraffe and Annika comes to Steam on February 18th, which means you’ve not got long to wait to see whether or not you’ll get to fall in love with the world.
