Mortal Shell tips and tricks

Soulslike games are always hard, and Mortal Shell might be one of the toughest around. Surviving isn’t something you can do by asking someone else into your game to fight on your behalf; you need to beat everything yourself. That’s why it’s important to have a headstart on the game, and that’s exactly what these Mortal Shell tips are for.
Patience
Above all else, learning to hold back and reserve your stamina and ability to harden will be what allows you to advance further, faster. It might seem obvious, but with the pace some monsters set, it’s easy to be drawn into their game and find yourself overwhelmed and out of options. Avoid pulling the attention of more than one enemy and if you do, make sure they don’t surround you. Enemies hit hard in Mortal Shell and don’t let up for long between attacks, so keeping your cool is key.
Follow the visions
In the forested hub area of the game, just after you arrive in it, is a door leading to a room featuring a masked woman, Sister Genessa, who will help you level up. Alongside her is a selection of entombed bodies you can examine. Each of these bodies provokes a vision of a place or person nearby, a hint of an unexplored passage. If you’re stuck for where to go, check these visions and follow the footsteps of the fallen. Be sure to check the empty weapon stands in the area above that room too for hints on where to find them.
Acquire the ability to parry
With no ability to block, avoiding damage in Mortal Shell can be challenging, so it’s essential you get this ability as soon as possible. After locating Sister Genessa, head upstairs and take note of the strange, giant bird-like creature chained up nearby. Check around the outside of the room he chained up in, and you’ll find that one of the chains holding him down can be interacted with, so do just that, and you’ll get access to the ability to parry. Without this, you’ll really struggle against the bosses you’ll soon face.
Practice against Girsha
Heading back to Sister Genessa, if you leave through the nearby door to her tomb, you’ll see a cave opening ahead of you. Watch out for bear traps as you approach and then really watch out because just beyond them is the first serious challenge Mortal Shell throws at you – a ravening beast named Girsha. He’s fast, hits hard enough to take most of your health in one combo and is a perfect opponent to test your new parry skill against. His proximity to your spawn point and relatively simple attack patterns make him ideal for honing skills early in the game, as you’ll be right back in the fight with him within a minute or so of dying. And you probably will be dying a few times against this nasty feral monster.
Check every corner for secrets
Mortal Shell’s level design is incredibly packed with secret passages, narrow walkways and obscure corners with powerful upgrade weapons or even characters to talk to lurking behind them, so scour everything. The room where you fight Girsha, for example, has multiple exits that lead to entirely different locations, and they’re incredibly easy to overlook. One last word of warning for those scouring the edges of the map, keep an eye out for a particular bandit who wants a bite to eat and a drink before offering you the chance to join him in the life of a brigand forever. He’s not lying about that forever part…
