Roguebook Is Slay The Spire But With Exploration
It’s natural that successful games get imitated by games that come after. It’s a big part of how gaming has evolved through the years, and without this constant stacking of new ideas on top of old ones, we’d probably not have any games at all at this point. We’re very much still in the era of games that have been inspired by Slay the Spire, and the latest one to come out, or the latest one that is going to come out, is Roguebook.
I’ve been playing the demo, and it’s good, but my lord is it steeped in Slay the Spire. If you’ve played StS at all, you’ll instantly be familiar with the combat. In fact, I’d wager you’ll find everything a little easier if you’ve played the inspiration here. If that was all Roguebook was, then I’d probably be writing about a different game. However, there are two things that make Roguebook stand out, and it’s worth talking about them. The first one is that the game is being created in partnership with Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering.
The second thing worth noting is the exploration. Rather than picking a path through the world, you get to carve your own. That means you can choose to avoid fights if you want to, or go looking for healing. It makes things a bit different to the other games of this ilk, and I think it’s a big enough change, and an interesting enough one, that Roguebook is worth a try. Check out the demo for it if you like the sound of it.
