Perish

Purgatory in PERISH is a hellscape full of gold

All that glitters is definitely gold in Perish, an ultra-stylish first-person shooter that takes place on a particularly shimmering surface of Purgatory, and where the undead are adorned with gilded armor and weaponry. Rather than the perfumed decay of Hell and the sinewy structures that prop up the underworld, your first sight in Perish is that of inexplicable brightness, stemming from the luster of yellow around you. That’s because you’re not entering the depths of depravity—not yet, anyway—but making the arduous, Herculean journey towards Elysium and salvation.

It’s definitely a vision that sets Perish apart from the gloominess of razing a fiery path through hellspawns and demons in shooters like Doom. You emerge from the catacombs as a corporeal spirit named amyetri, armed with only a broken sword, and greeted by a corpse-like deity who offers to help illuminate your path ahead.

Fortunately, your crusade comes with the opportunity to outfit yourself with better equipment, as you throw yourself into ceaseless battles. In exchange, you’ll earn gold danake, the predominant currency of Perish’s underworld, which you can exchange for better gear. After all, even within the confines of Purgatory, you’re still subject to the market whims of a bustling economy akin to the living realm.

Perish also makes liberal use of iconographies from Greek legends and Christianity; the gold danake, for instance, are coins that stem from the Persian Empire, and are usually found in graves. You’ll also get to meet Greek legends, like Theseus, Orpheus, and Hephaestus, to name a few; even the blood-thirsty gladiators who seek to stop you are inspired by the deities and other figures from these mythologies. That said, the gods have granted amyetri with armament that are definitely ahead of their time. On top of ye traditional gladiator weapons like javelins and swords, we also get to wield firearms such as shotguns and pistols! These, remarkably, do not look out of place in Perish.

Perish truly can’t be released fast enough, and unfortunately it does not have a release date yet.
