Dark Deity is an indie Fire Emblem game
What the world needs more of is character-driven strategy games inspired by Fire Emblem. There are lots of other things that would help too, but I can’t offer you those here. What I can do though, is introduce you to Dark Deity. Dark Deity is very obviously a Fire Emblem game, and there’s literally nothing wrong with that. It’s set in a world filled with heroes, broken oaths, and magical powers, but also a world that was nearly wiped out by a Calamity.
Alongside the slightly more weeby artwork, which is an impressive feat given the already weeby artwork in your standard Fire Emblem game, the thing that really caught my eye in Dark Deity is how complex the character customisation seems to be. There are 30 characters, 54 different character classes, and a chunk of upgradeable weapons and spells. That should all keep even the most fiendish minmaxers happy.
There are also over 400 conversations, which seem to lead you down a bond system that’ll have your units growing closer to each other, and no doubt more powerful in battle too. It’s all rather familiar, but the actual customisation seems like it could be more involved than Fire Emblem, and the art style will instantly put you back in the days of the Game Boy Advance games. It just looks lovely, and while the release date is currently set as a rather frustrating “Coming Soon,” there’s also a news post stating they’ll be at E3, so maybe we’ll find out more this weekend.
