Arietta of Spirits

Journey into the Spirit Realm in Arietta of Spirits

Arietta of Spirits is an upcoming pixelated action game that takes inspiration from little Link’s 2D adventures. It uses all the key staples of Zelda games—nostalgic retro-art, wanderlust and fast paced combat—to deliver an emotional narrative with deep lore and a new wayfaring hero.

The tale starts when Arietta and her family decide to visit her grandmother’s neglected cabin on her one year death anniversary. However, the trip doesn’t go as expected and in a video game-esque turn of events, Arietta meets a mysterious new companion and gains strange powers that lets her see spirits. Hungry for answers and stuck on an island brimming with ominous forests, dark caverns and looming secrets, Arietta must venture ahead and uncover the secrets of the Spirit Realm.

Exploration and piecing together the game’s deep lore are the main hooks here. Combat seems like standard fare. If you’ve played Link’s Awakening or one of the several other Zelda-likes such as Darksiders, you’ll feel right at home. There are a wide range of enemies across the game’s diverse areas. Arietta will rely on her sword to slay monsters and her shield to gain a defensive edge. Fighting is fast-paced and easy to grasp, appealing to veteran Zelda players and newcomers alike.

There have been many Zelda-like games in the past, some successfully creating unique experiences while others ending up as underwhelming derivatives. Can Arietta of Spirits set itself apart? We won’t have to wait long to find out.

Arietta of Spirits launches August 20 across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam.
