Torn Away

You’re a child war survivor in Torn Away

War surely is hell, but sheer machismo and the military-entertainment complex that have long dominated games means that the industry is flooded with combat simulators that takes place during wartime, rather than seeing these from the much more compelling perspectives of civilians. The tide is changing, however, with games like This War of Mine, which puts you in the shoes of regular folks trying to salvage enough food, drinks and necessities in order to stay alive.

Another somber title that’s about experiencing the horrors of war from outside the military or soldier’s perspective is Torn Away, a narrative-driven adventure and platformer that’s about surviving the tragedies of World War 2 through the eyes of a 10-year-old child named Asya. It seems like a heartbreaking tale: as Asya, you’ve been torn away from your home, and sent to work in a forced labour camp. Having found a small window of opportunity to escape the camp, you decided to flee across Germany and Poland—back home.

Aside from several cinematic sequences, the trailer of Torn Away also see Asya avoiding detection by patrolling soldiers, and having to cross precarious cliffs by knocking down trees, and surviving other dangers just to return home. Torn Away is, in essence, a puzzle platformer with some point-and-click elements that lets you explore your surroundings and, by extension, your dire circumstances. Adding to the game’s sense of realism, too, is that these events are inspired by actual children’s war diaries.

Torn Away doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’ll probably see a full launch this year.
