The Invincible Look Horrifying

Horror games are the flavour of the season given that we’re rapidly approaching Halloween. I’m not a huge horror fan, but I do appreciate the work they do in, presumably, making everyone scream and cry a lot. I am, however, weirdly into the games that aren’t overtly horror-y. These are the games that just make you feel deeply uncomfortable, the kinds of experiences that will have you yelping out loud if anyone sneaks up and lays a hand on your shoulder while you’re playing them.

The Invincible has just released its debut trailer, and frankly, it has so much of that underlying terror within it that it’s hard not to be intrigued by it. The game itself is inspired by a novel by Stanisław Lem, and the trailer shows off Dr. Yasna, who has been climbing up a cave system on a planet that looks like Mars in search of someone who they probably shouldn’t be looking for. Naturally, things go poorly, but we don’t really get to see why that’s bad, which somehow makes it that much more unnerving.

It’s set in an alternate version of our future where digital technology never overtook analogue tech, but despite that, humanity has managed to find its way into space. Your role is to find your missing crew, and try to survive as the planet you’re on tries to reject you. It’s an interesting enough set-up, but the graphics are the thing that makes it so enticing. Just go and watch the trailer and you’ll see what we mean.
