Review Round-Up: Revita, Mail Mole, And More

Well, it’s the end of March, and it’s also the end of my time at The Indie Game Website. In honour of that fact, I’ve written up five more little reviews for games that you may have missed from the month. Feel free to feast your eyes upon my words after drying your eyes. It’ll be okay; Khee Hoon is a much better writer anyway.

Revita – Early Access

I do, as you know, love a good roguelike. Well, Revita is definitely a good roguelike, but it’s also one that feels a little slim at present. Revita has you pushing through 2D platforming areas and twin-stick shooting your way through everything in your path. It’s a roguelike, so you’ll die. The unique mechanic here is that you can sacrifice your health to gain more power, and it’s a great idea that always has you weighing up risk and reward in a very obvious sense. I like Revita a lot as is, but I’d probably recommend waiting a bit if you’re looking for a long-term timesink.

Mail Mole

Character platformers hold a weird place in my heart. I still enjoy them, but the ones I tend to play are usually those with a heavy dose of nostalgia. Mail Mole has you running around as Molty, who has just had their holiday cut short because of drama. What this means, in short, is that you’ll have to tunnel around levels collecting all manner of fruits and powering up power plants. It’s a fun loop, and while it starts a little slow, the later levels present some genuine challenges that should push you to your limits. Just be warned that Molty can be a little annoying if the sound effects are too high.

Stronghold: Warlords

Stronghold: Warlords is an odd game. On the one hand, it’s a wonderful setting, and it has some of the most satisfying castle building I’ve found in a game. It’s a genuine joy to plan everything out, and it makes the fact that the actual strategy side of the game feels a bit outdated sting a bit more. It’s not bad, not at all, but it feels like a game that’s stuck in the past a little bit.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

Here’s a disclaimer, if you’ve already got the first two Overcooked! games, do not get this. However, if you’re new to the series, then Overcooked! All You Can Eat is an absolute joy. The feeling of panicking your way around a kitchen with friends is incredible, and the chaos it brings is unrivalled. There are a few online issues at the moment though, but I’m scoring this assuming they’ll be fixed.

Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace

Board games are great because you can play through time and time again and experience something a little different each time. At least, that’s normally how it is. Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace is inspired by the Arkham Horror board game series, but it doesn’t match it in any real way. It’s a bit of a shame, but it’s all a bit too short and a bit too basic most of the time.
