Deedlit In Wonder Labyrinth Is An Excellent Metroidvania

For some reason, Metroidvanias are very much taking up a large amount of space in my brain at the moment. As a result of that, it’s been a good time to revisit some of the excellent takes on that genre we’ve had in the last couple of years. Well, I say last couple of years, but 2021 has actually been an incredible time of Metroidvanias with the likes of Recompile, GRIME, and the lesser-known Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth.

Now, intensely clunky name aside, Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is an incredibly enjoyable game. I’ve not watched the anime, so I can’t speak to whether or not it’s a worthy addition to that, but I do know that it’s a fun game, and that’s the most important thing to me. It has you playing as Deedlit, a female High Elf who has an affinity with wind and water. Your job is to guide her through the stranger labyrinth that stands in front of her.

During the game you have to constantly switch between Sylph, a wind spirit, and Salamander, a fire spirit, to overcome the enemies and traps within the game. Of course, this is a Metroidvania, so you’ll also gain new weapons and abilities as you go through the game. It’s all very heavily influenced by some of the best in the genre, and while it can feel a little too close to those inspirations sometimes, it’s also a game that does it shockingly well. So, if you’re looking for a new action RPG, maybe give this one a shot.
